Designing Overview

Throughout our journey as an FTC team we have utilized multiple softwares to create our 3D Designs. This page shows is what we've used, a little about it, and some pros and cons.

PTC Creo: PTC Creo is a 3D CAD software developed by PTC and contains a variety of programs/apps in its overall software. This includes Creo Simulate, Creo Parametric, Creo Layout, and Creo Direct. These apps are also available in a number of languages such as English, Spanish, French, etc. Creo provides the capability of solid modeling, assembly modeling, direct modeling, parametric modeling, and surface modeling for mechanical designers.

TinkerCAD: TinkerCad is an online 3D printing design tool that allows you to easily turn your vision of something into a project that is accessible on a computer. This platform also provides 3D printing services that print your design and ship it to your door. The software’s tools for 3D design are available to beginners and advanced designers. For people that are new to TinkerCad, TinkerCad offers a number of tutorials and tools. This is a free-web based app that can be accessible through Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.

SolidWorks: SolidWorks is a computer-aided engineering and design program that runs on Microsoft Windows. This program was developed by Dassault Systems and can be used for parametric and explicit modeling. More capabilities of SolidWorks include 3D solid modeling, large assembly design, sheet metal design, weldments, plastic and cast part design, mold design, electrical cable harness and conduit design, piping and tubing design, and importing/exporting of CAD data.

AutoDesk Innventor: AutoDesk Inventor is a computer-aided design application that is used for 3D mechanical design, simulation, visualization, and documentation. The application was developed by AutoDesk. Inventor allows the integration of both 2D and 3D data, which creates a virtual representation of the design/product. The unique features of AutoDesk Inventor include more efficient parametric modeling, direct edit and freeform modeling tools, and has multi-CAD translation capabilities in the software. Currently, the latest form of AutoDesk Inventor is the AutoDesk Inventor LT 2018 and the AutoDesk Inventor Professional 2018.

TurboCAD: TurboCAD is a CAD software application for 2D and 3D design and drafting. This software runs on both Mac operating systems as well as Windows operating systems. This software, like many other 3D CAD softwares, is available in a variety of languages such as English, German, and French. The Windows version of TurboCAD has general drafting tools as well as tools for 3D architectural and mechanical design. However, the Mac version of the software has a limited amount of tools and only has tools for 2D and 3D drafting. Currently, the latest version of this software is TurboCAD 2017.

Currently, we use TinkerCAD and PTC Creo because of their flexibility and compatibility with operating systems.
